Brief History
The city of Antsirabe was founded by Norwegian missionaries in the 19th century. The name “Antsirabe” literally means “the place of lots of salt,” which may refer to the salt in its famous hot springs. Much of the city’s growth is attributed to it being a trading and farming centre, which in turn contributed significantly to the development of Madagascar. Antsirabe retains much of its colonial appeal, as evidenced by its remarkable architecture, reflecting its historical influence.
Breathtaking Geography
Antsirabe is about 1,500 meters and some 170 kilometres south of Antananarivo’s capital. This elevation position ensures a cool, refreshing temperature in contrast to the tropical heat found in most of Madagascar. The surrounding landscape comprises rolling hills, rice paddies, and scenic lakes. The lakes include Tritriva and Andraikiba, offering breathtaking views and perfect relaxation conditions.
The town is an ideal point of departure for a journey through the famous Highlands. For the more adventurous spirits, there is the possibility of hiking around volcanic landscapes nearby, often passing through isolated villages where many traditional lifestyles and customs are still present.
Cultural Vibrancy
Antsirabe bursts into exuberance with a rich tapestry of culture, artistry, and plain beauty. Taking a stroll through the town’s vibrant streets, one encounters a mixture of Malagasy traditions with a French influence, likely to pique the interest of anyone with an appreciation of cultural diversity. The very centre of Antsirabe lies the Central Market called ‘Tsena’ locally in Malagasy. This will be where local inhabitants meet up to sell fresh produce, handmade goods, and other trinkets that would make great souvenirs.
One of the highlights of local craft is the carved zebu horns. The artist transforms Madagascar zebu cattle horns into exquisite jewellery, home decoration, and other exciting objects. Visiting the artisans’ workshops fosters a connection with the community and provides insights into and understanding of Malagasy’s artistic traditions.
