Foulpointe, also known as Mahelevona by the Malagasy people, is a picturesque eastern coast town of the big island. It is a hidden gem. Its tranquil beaches, historical sites, and rich local culture beckon visitors. It offers a place to unwind by the ocean or explore the area’s unique heritage. Foulpointe provides a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

Here are some of the town’s must-see attractions and activities in this charming little seaside town.

Relaxing on Foulpointe’s Pristine Beaches

Foulpointe is renowned for its magnificent beach, where calm waters and soft sands create a perfect setting for relaxation. Stretching out on the white sands of Foulpointe’s main beach, enjoying the gentle waves and warm sun, is an experience to behold.

The beach is ideal for picnics and swimming. This is due to the natural coral reef that protects it from strong currents and high waves crashing on the beach.

The place is ideal for snorkelling and water sports. The clear waters offer excellent visibility for snorkelling. Explore life under the sea and get a different perspective by kayaking or paddleboarding on the coasts. Exploring the reef at low tide is a must.

On the beach, artisans sell their products. These products range from Malagasy traditional hats to wristbands to plants. You will also see men selling coconut water. Massage before or after a swim does good for the body. Many women offer massage. The ones belonging to a massage association wear a white coat with a logo of their organisation woven on the left side of their coats.

Immersing in Local Culture

Foulpointe offers rich cultural experiences, connecting visitors with the local community and traditions. Visiting a traditional village is an experience that is worth mentioning. Explore nearby villages and get to know the Betsimisaraka people to understand their customs, crafts, and way of life. This is a very enriching cultural experience.

Ensure not to miss out on the exquisite local Malagasy cuisine, which has a mouthwatering mix of African, Asian, and European influences. In Foulepointe, from the fresh catches along the coast to fragrant rice dishes, the local food will pamper your taste buds.

A series of restaurants line the main street of Foulepointe and the beachfront. On the beachfront, one can order fresh seafood cooked after the order is made. Sometimes, you must wait an hour before the cooked food is served.

Outdoor Adventures and Nature

Beyond beaches and history, Foulpointe is an open door to fantastic nature and outdoor activities.

Here are some key activities that I found interesting. Experience Foulpointe on foot, which is an exciting activity. Numerous hiking trails run through lush, green, tropical forests, where you can see local wildlife and enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings. Otherwise, a stroll in the town centre is refreshing.

Boat tours are another exciting activity. Guided boat tours along the coastline or visiting the reef by pirogue is an experience. These tours provide a unique perspective of the area’s natural beauty.

Some Practical Tips for Visiting Foulpointe

Planning ahead for your visit to Foultepointe is essential to maximise your trip. The following are some of my practical tips for such a visit.

The best time to visit Foulepointe is during the dry season, from May to October. Foulepointe offers the most pleasant weather for beach activities and exploration during this period.

There is a range of accommodations available in Foulepointe. These range from charming beachfront bungalows to comfortable guesthouses and hotels to ensure you are close to all the action. Foulepointe accommodations exude different experiences that allow you to remain close to everything a visitor would wish for.

While Foulpointe is small enough to explore on foot, you may want to rent a bicycle or take a rickshaw (Pousse Pousse) to get to surrounding spots. Car rentals are also available for longer journeys.

The road to Foulepointe from Toamasina could be in a better state. Though not relatively from Toamasina, the time to get there is unrealistic.
