The Quay Mahajunga of the port of Mahajunga, lying on the west coast of Madagascar, is of commercial and economic importance to Mahajunga. It offers an unforgettable experience that effortlessly combines traditions, natural beauty, and local craftsmanship. The most striking feature is the quayside, with the fleet of boats so colourful and animated. It’s a sight to watch and very much worth the attention of any cameraman or travel enthusiast. Whenever I am in Mahajunga, I frequently visit this place and take a few snaps. I hope these snaps will lure you to pay a visit.
A Vibrant Scene of Colour and Craftsmanship
As one walks along the Quai, the splendour of the colours of boats painted so brightly lined up along the harbour immediately catches one’s sight. Every ship is a piece of art handcrafted by expert traditional craftsmen who have passed their knowledge down the generations. It reflects the spirit of Mahajunga and the rich heritage of the Sakalava and Malagasy boat-building with vivid colours splashed on every boat. Indeed, it’s an eye candy and just the perfect spot for taking those Instagram-worthy shots!
Traditional Art in Every Boat
The Mahajunga boatbuilding tradition is a wonder and remarkable in Mahajunga. The sight of artisans at work fascinates one with their precision and dedication. Their expertise has been developed through years of practice to result in functional vessels and works of art. The craftsmanship you witness here is an authentic taste of Malagasy culture. For this reason, the Quay is more than a port; it’s an added cultural attraction.

Planning Your Visit
Mahajunga can be reached by airplane from the capital, Antananarivo, or by road. Usually, I travel by road using Transport Premier Class, Cotisse, or SoaTransPlus. But the travel is a whole day. The Quay is within walking distance from the central part of the city of Mahajunga. Do not forget an early morning or late afternoon leisurely walk along the Quay when the views are just impressive!
